Description
The brush washer has foliated body, modelled as a special bundle shape. This particular shape is sometimes referred to as “bamboo” design or “sugar cane” design. This Longquan brush washer covered in a finely crackled olive-green glaze. A circular unglazed area is within the foot-rim.
This kind of brush washer can be seen in international auction offered by auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Bonhams, Christie’s, YuJen Taipei. Similar item can also be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (object number 16.156.2), Asian Civilisations Museum (Accession No. 1996-00883). They are dated from Yuan to early Ming dynasty. Similar brushers excavated in Santa Ana, Philippines were dated to Song dynasty based on the resemble sherds recovered from Ta-Yao kiln (Leandro and Cecilia Locsin, Oriental Ceramics discovered in the Philippines, 1967, Pl. 60).
