Description:

A Chinese Porcelain blue-washed box with lid from Hatcher collection. The box bears the auction tag of Christie’s Amsterdam June 1984.

The Chinese porcelain ware from Hatcher shipwreck which was dated to the years 1643-1646, according to the inscribed date (癸未春日, spring of 1643) on the two covers of large oviform jars and two porcelain order lists of Dutch East India Company. The manufacture of the porcelain from this ship junk was deduced to 1640-1645.

The Hatcher shipwreck is called as the time capsule. Most of the porcelain ware were Jingdezhen Blue and white. There were approximately 25,000 unbroken porcelain pieces lifted up from South China Sea. In 1983 and 1984 there 22,178 pieces were sold at Christie’s Amsterdam. This piece here is from the third sale in the June of 1984. In 1985 Captain Hatcher returned to the sea site and salvaged another 2,000 more pieces.

The small box has monochrome blue colour. Before a clear glaze executed, a pale blue wash was applied on the dark blue-penciled lines. This decorating technique as blue on blue (蓝上蓝) shows an unusual effect. A prunus flower pained on the top of the lid. Around the prunus flower are sea water waves. This flower floating on the flowing water (落花流水) is a popular motif from the transitional period (1620-1683), extending from later Ming to early Qing time.

Such globular lidded box is believed to be used for pill. There were about 1000 blue-washed porcelain pieces with various shapes in Hatcher Collection. Among them, 555 of such blue washed small boxes were auctioned in Christie’s Amsterdam. This box is 1/555 of blue-washed small box and 1/27000 of Hatcher Collection.

Identical pieces can be seen in British Museum, collection number: 1984,0303.15.a-b.
